Sunday morning on August 12, 2012, Colorado Springs Fire Department was dispatched to North Murray Boulevard and Sawyer Way. It was reported as a traffic accident with two cars rolled over and one into a building, with people trapped. Once Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived on scene, Command asked for two additional AMR Ambulances, CSFD Squad 107, and CSFD Heavy Rescue 17 to respond. Two people had to be extricated from the crash, and were transported to local hospitals. According to CSFD Public Information Officer, Lt. Varnell, 2 vehicles collided, and a third parked vehicle was damaged. He also said that Heavy Rescue 17 would return back to the scene after vehicles were moved, to check for structural damage to an apartment building that was struck by one of the vehicles. Colorado Springs Police are investigating the cause of the crash and remained on scene, after Fire Department personnel completed their extrication of the patients. Colorado Springs Utilities was called to the scene, because a large electrical vault had been shifted off of its foundation due to the accident. The two occupants that were extricated from the white vehicle, later died, due to injuries sustained in this horrible crash.
