Platte Wildland & Debris Fire-Colorado Springs-CSFD

Date of Incident-December 28, 2013 Debris Pile Fire with Grass Fire South of 5225 East Plate Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado

On December 28, 2013 at 3:16 p.m., Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a report of a grass fire at 5225 E. Platte Avenue. First arriving company found a large debris pile on fire with spot fires starting in the nearby grassy areas of an open field. A water supply was laid from a hydrant at the end of Wooten Road, into the field with the burning debris pile. An additional water re-supply point was set up at the end of East Pikes Peak Avenue and Frost Lane. Colorado Springs Fire Department along with mutual aid companies had forty-four firefighters battling this blaze. Cimarron Hills Fire, Black Forest Fire, and Colorado Springs Utilities Wildland Team assisted with controlling the fire. Six Type I Engines, five Brush Type VI Engines, and two Wildland Type III Engines were requested and dispatched to the incident. Sustained 40-MPH winds and dry conditions created challenges in bringing the fire under control. The fire was brought under control at 5:42 p.m. No structures were damaged or threatened during the fire incident. According to CSFD Lt. Soppe, the fire started in a debris pile of wood, and this fire caused grass fires, that were contained to under 2 acres in the field. No injuries to firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
