Train Derailment-Colorado Springs-CSFD

Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA
April 12, 2015
Just after 10:30 PM, Colorado Springs Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a train derailment near 930 Baltic Street. First arriving fire companies gave a size up of ten train cars off of the tracks. CSFD Hazardous Materials Teams responded to the scene. Command was set up at the corner of W. Fountain Boulevard and S.Sierra Madre Street. CSFD Mobile Command Unit was called to the scene. It was determined that some of the derailed cars spilled some white powder onto the ground. Later this was found out to be dry ammonia. CSFD Hazardous Materials Crews set up a hot zone for the affected area during the incident. No evacuations of nearby residents were done, but residents were advised to stay inside their homes. No injuries were reported on this incident. Multiple road closures were put into place. Nearby homes were not damaged by the derailed train cars. Once Colorado Springs Fire Department determined the scene to be stable, they turned the scene over to BNSF Personnel. Cleanup, removal, and repair operations have been going on through the night and continue as of 4 PM, April 13, 2015. Many road closures are still in effect, as many train personnel work the cleanup stages. CSFD PIO reports that the confirmed cargo that spilled, is Ammonium Sulfate, which is innocuous material used to green up your lawn. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
