Colorado Springs Fire Department's Fire Station 21 Grand Opening and Celebration of PSST Projects-August 29, 2013, 10:30 A.M. at 7320 Dublin Boulevard
On Thursday, August, 29, 2013, Colorado Springs Fire Department celebrated the grand opening of Fire Station 21. The opening of the event started with the CSFD Honor Guard presenting the colors. CSFD Deputy Chief Steve Dubay welcomed the community and guests for their attendance. Some of the speakers were, Mayor Steve Bach and the Project Architect Jim Fennell. Mayor Bach did the traditional ribbon cutting, by uncoupling, a large diameter fire hose that was stretched across Fire Engine 21's bay entrance. After the ceremony, punch and cake were served. Colorado Springs Fire Department Explorers demonstrated equipment use and answered questions on Engine 21.
Station 21 was officially put into service on Monday, August 26th, 2013 at 6:30 PM. Engine 21's crew was dispatched to their first call that same evening for a life-threatening medical emergency.
CSFD Station 21 is projected to have 500 calls for service in their first year of operation. The new station is located in the northeast part of Colorado Springs, on the corner of Dublin Boulevard and Peterson Road. The community and attendees were allowed to tour the inside of the facilities.
Some of the unique features about Fire Station 21:
-Represents an "old firehouse" design concept with a modern appearance
-It has solar panels on the roof to supply electricity.
-Apparatus bays are equipped with bi-folding vertical hanging doors designed for substantial savings in operations and maintenance costs.
-Is the first building in the county with an approved grey-water system, with water being distributed to a future adjacent community garden.
-Was designed as the first LEED Plantinum building in the city. (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
