Commercial Fire-Goodwill-Colorado Springs : On the morning of April 13th, 2013, at 8:55 AM, Colorado Springs Fire Engine 3 responded to an automatic fire alarm at Goodwill Industries on 2307 W. Colorado Avenue. I spoke with Public Information Officer-Lieutenant Aker on the details of the incident. Once Engine 3 arrived on scene and investigated, it was determined to be a working fire, which became a one alarm fire. Employees made a full, successful evacuation of the structure. Smoke was found showing from a bay door on the charlie side, E3 took command, advanced an 1 3/4″ attack line and declared a working fire. Engine 1 laid in with dual supply lines from 23rd & Colorado and assumed I-RIC while E3 started fire attack. Truck 1 assisted with opening up and District 1 assumed command. Command assigned Truck 4 as RIC, Haz-Mat 14 as safety / accountability and 73 as PIO. The fire was contained to a large trash compactor, which was located inside the large commercial building. Firefighters were able to control the isolated fire in about five minutes. District 1 Chief-Branham, was the on scene commander. No injuries were reported during the incident. The quick response by firefighters kept this fire from becoming a major incident, and kept the fire from damaging the structure. Also, smoke did not damage the interior of the building. At this time, the fire is under investigation, with no cause, yet determined. After overhaul and cleanup, employees were able to once again occupy the building. Emergency Units that responded to this incident: Fire Engine 1 and 3, Ladder Trucks 1 and 4, Rescue Squad 108, Hazardous Materials Unit 14, District 1 and District 2 Chiefs, AMR Ambulance 68, AMR Supervisor Unit, and PIO Unit 73. Structure Fire-CHFD-Kachina Drive : On March 28, 2013, around 11PM, Cimarron Hills Fire Department was toned out for a smoke investigation on Chiricahua Drive. As emergency units-Ladder Truck 1331, Chief 1300, and Duty Chief 1306, were responding to that address, another address on Kachina Drive was reported to have a home with lots of smoke and flames coming out. CHFD Ladder 1331 reported lots of smoke as they approached Kachina Drive. Once on scene Ladder 31 reported heavy smoke with flames coming from a two story residential structure. Ladder 31 took a hydrant and laid out a 5inch supply line to the truck. Fire attack lines were immediately put into place, with a defensive, (exterior) mode of attack, on the burning home. The residents of the home were reported to be away. No injuries were reported from the on scene commander. Mutual aid was brought in to help control the blaze. These mutual aid emergency units were: Peterson Air Force Base Engine 9 and Chief 2, Falcon Fire Engine 313 and Brush 342, and Colorado Springs Ladder Truck 17 and Battalion Chief-District 2. The fire was brought under control with no additional structures catching fire. El Paso County Sheriff Deputies provided scene security and the Sheriff's Office dispatched an El Paso County Fire Investigator to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. The scene is under investigation at this time. No details were released on how this fire may have happened.

Traffic Accident Mock-up Sand Creek High School : On May 22nd, 2013, Fire Fighters with Colorado Springs Fire Department and Cimarron Hills Fire Department, joined together to do a mock-up traffic accident at Sand Creek High School. There were two presentations given to students that day, and highlighted the importance of not texting and driving, and not driving under the influence. Vehicles used in the demonstration, came from actual cars involved in previous collisions. Actors were in the vehicles while the fire fighters demonstrated the tools and amount of personnel that it takes to perform an actual vehicle extrication. Doors were cut off and roofs were removed by rescuers, patients (actors) were treated, as the students watched the safety presentation.

House Fire Security FD : Security Fire Department responded on the evening of 3/30/2013, to a report of house fire on Chimayo Drive. 03/30 ~ Around 19:30 an El Paso County Sheriff Deputy traveling on Highway 85 near South Academy Blvd reported a house fire across the railroad tracks to dispatch. At the same time multiple 911 callers reported the same situation with no address available. Deputies arrived at 2558 Chimayo Drive and reported the charlie side of the home fully involved. The flames had also burned through the electrical lines in the rear. Security Firefighters responded and were able to knock the fire within 10 minutes. All searches proved negative, no injuries were reported and the occupants self evacuated. Incident Report Written by: Eric Hurst-5280 Fire Emergency Units on scene: Chief 100, Security Ladder Truck 131, Fire Engine 111, and Fire Engine 113 According to the Security Fire Department Website: The Security Fire Department has an average call volume of 3300 calls a year for service. Big R Fire-Falcon FD-at Night : Falcon Firefighters will be on scene through the night continuing to battle the building and hay bale remains that caught fire Thursday. The entire building and contents were relocated by a front end loader to a nearby field that had caught fire earlier in the day. Piles of flaming and smoldering debris remain to be totally extinguished. This is expected to take time and crews will be working all through the night and into Friday until the remaining debris is completely out. Fire crews did an amazing job of keeping the fire away from a nearby building filled with hay, straw, and feed. This location is on U.S. Highway 24, in Falcon, Colorado. Fire crews were able to contain the fire to one of the feed storage buildings. The main store at Big R Falcon was not damaged by fire. Waldo Canyon Fire El Paso County, Colorado USA Day 2 News June 24, 2012 : In El Paso County, Colorado off of Highway 24, outside Manitou Springs is where this fire is. This huge forest and wildland fire started on June 23, 2012 and quickly used up emergency resources to try and quickly bring it under control. As of 6:30PM MST, 11,000 people have been evacuated from the areas threatened. This fire has burned over 2500 acres, and has 0% containment. This fire threatens to burn the City of Manitou Springs, and the West Side of Colorado Springs if not brought under control soon. Evacuations are in place at this time for multiple El Paso and Teller County towns and cities. Please obey all orders to evacuate as emergency resources are brought in from local, state, other states, federal, and international sources to get this fire contained. Waldo Canyon Fire El Paso County, Colorado USA Day 4 News June 26, 2012 : Day 4 of the Waldo Canyon Fire proved to be devastating to Northwest Colorado Springs as seen in this photo gallery. • Size: 5,168 acres and growing with 5% containment. • Full Containment Estimated by July 16 • Red Flag Warning Today • Hwy 24 Closed in Ute Pass/Waldo Canyon • No Injuries • No Homes destroyed • Fire personnel focusing on infrastructure protection and containing the fire on the north side of Highway 24. • 13,542 buildings were threatened including 120 commercial properties. • Only one shed has been damaged so far. • This is now officially a type one fire and federal authorities have taken over control of the incident. Evacuation Centers Red Cross Evacuation Centers are at Summit Elementary School in Divide and Cheyenne Mountain HS. For information on evacuee's who have registered at an Evacuation Center, call the Red Cross at 719-785-2724 (and be prepared to write down the various numbers to call). Waldo Canyon Fire El Paso County, Colorado USA Day 3 News June 25, 2012 : The Waldo Canyon Fire remained very active today. Many residents out taking pictures of the smoke plumes and aircraft. Many additional emergency personnel assigned to the incident. This is the number one priority fire in the nation at this time. Please do not underestimate the danger of this forest fire. Please obey all orders to stay out of the immediate area around this fire and please evacuate any residential areas that are under evacuation orders by the police. Also keep roadways clear for emergency vehicle access by not parking in the roadways or on the shoulders. Please be extreme careful outdoors with anything that may cause a fire. Overnight, firefighters were able to hold the fire at bulldozed lines, which included protection of the Cedar Heights Subdivision. Previous wildfire mitigation efforts in this area helped to hold the fire line. Structure protection is in place on the fire's perimeter. Efforts are concentrated on keeping the fire to the north of US 24, improving the line around Cascade, and structure protection near Cedar Heights Subdivision. Firefighter and public safety are always the number one priority in conducting wildland firefighting operations. Today's weather presents challenging conditions including high temperatures (88-92 degrees), wind (gusts up to 30 mph), low humidity (7-10%) and little to no cloud cover. The region is under a red flag warning.

Peyton Fire Pumper/Tender 3660 : Peyton Fire Protection District just recently received delivery of a 2013 Freightliner Fire Pumper/Tender, combination apparatus. Peyton Fire is located in a community, in rural eastern El Paso County, Colorado, USA. This new truck has a large capacity water tank of 3000 gallons. This dual pump truck has a Hale 500 gallon per minute pump that allows for pump and roll capabilities, like for a grass fire. The truck has sprayer nozzles under each corner of the front bumper. The 3 crosslay compartments located above the pump panel hold two setups of 200 foot, 1 & 3/4 inch hose, and one run of 200 foot, 2 & 1/2 inch fire hose. Two port-a-tanks, one on each side, have a holding capacity of 2000 gallons each. The apparatus is equipped with supply line: 600 feet of 3 inch line for a forward lay and 600 feet of 3 inch line set up for a reverse lay. This rig is outfitted with ten Goodyear G291 Tires.

T/A Tractor Trailer vs. Nissan Altima : On June 5, 2012 an accident occured involving a tractor trailer and a Nissan Altima. This took place at Fountain (24) and Academy Park Loop in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Extrication tools were used to cut and remove the roof of the car to get better access to the patient. The intersection was shut down for hours as crews worked to collect all the recycle type trash the truck was hauling. Three heavy duty tow trucks were called in to upright the truck from its' side.

Big R Fire-Falcon FD-US Highway 24 : On January 24th, 2013, Falcon Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Big R Store in Falcon, Colorado. On arrival it was discovered that one of the buildings that houses stockpiles of hay had caught fire. The wind was able to drive some of the fire into the surrounding field, which also caught fire. Some homes needed to be evacuated initially, due to their close proximity to the grass fire. Mutual aid was brought in from Peyton, Black Forest, and Ellicott Fire to assist in the blaze. As of 5:30PM today emergency vehicles were still on scene working to extinguish the fire. The main retail store of Big R Falcon was not damaged. Also the feed storage building adjacent to the one destroyed by fire was protected by hard working fire crews on scene. The entire water supply used in fire suppression had to be brought to the scene by Fire Department Tender Trucks. Storage Lot Fire-CHFD-Paonia ST : Cimarron Hills Fire Protection District responded to a fire in a storage lot off of Paonia St. and Terminal Avenue early Friday morning. Once on scene, fire crews realized that there were multiple recreational vehicles well involved with fire. Mutual aid was brought in from Peterson AFB and the City of Colorado Springs, to assist with controlling the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Major Traffic Accident HWY 94-Ellicott CO : On the afternoon of November 21st, 2012, Ellicott Fire Protection District responded to a report of a 2 vehicle traffic accident at Peyton Highway and Colorado Highway 94 in Eastern El Paso County. See location on Google Maps at:http://goo.gl/maps/KNR4D Two priority response medical helicopters were called to the scene by "Highway 94 Command". On the highway, the Toyota Camry was heavily damaged by high-speed impact made with a Chevrolet 2500 HD pick-up truck. Two patients were reported trapped in the wreckage at the scene. Mutual aid response was initiated from nearby Schriever Air Force Base's Engine 5 and Falcon Fire Protection District's Engine 313, to assist with extrication efforts and multiple-patient care on scene. Multiple ground ambulances and paramedics via AMR were also utilized on scene. Patient care was executed very effectively with multiple agencies working together at the accident scene. Several State Patrol Units and El Paso County Sheriff Units were on scene for safety and highway traffic control. Colorado State Patrol Officers worked on the accident investigation and cause.

Structure Fire Falcon FD Smith Road : Early morning on January 18, 2013, Falcon Fire Department responded to a working structure fire in a detached garage/ work shop, on Smith Road in eastern El Paso County, Colorado. The homeowner was awakened by a loud popping noise coming from his work shop, looked outside to investigate, and called 911. Forced entry was made by cutting out a portion in a roll-up door, using a K-12 Rotary Saw. An aggressive interior attack performed by fire crews brought the fire under control in a timely manner. Water tenders were used for water supply on scene. An El Paso County Sheriffs Office Fire Investigator arrived on scene to determine the cause of the fire. I spoke with Falcon Lt. Corey Kirt, the on scene commander, about this fire incident. Lt. Kirt said fire ground operations went smoothly and the fire was brought under control with approximately 1000 gallons of water. The officer on the first arriving apparatus reported smoke showing from the structure and declared it a working fire. Falcon Fire Protection District responded to this incident with two engine companies and two water tenders for water supply. One tender truck from Ellicott Fire and one tender from Peyton Fire was requested via mutual aid. These two apparatus were staged on scene, but not needed, because of the fire being brought under control with the resources already on scene. The fire was contained to the one structure and thankfully the home on the property was not threatened, due to the quick response of fire crews. About Falcon Fire Protection District per their website: ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Falcon Fire Protection District (FFPD) is comprised entirely of unincorporated areas of El Paso County, Colorado’s most populous county. The District, without any organized towns or cities, is experiencing a rapid growth rate and gains an average of 800 homes and 2,000 new citizens every year. The Department is governed by a five-member, publicly-elected Board of Directors who serve four-year terms. The Department is managed by a career Fire Chief and three battalion chiefs (one per shift). The Department currently has 26 career firefighter/emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and 8 volunteer-reserve firefighter/EMTs. It also supports a reserve emergency medical services program comprised of 16 EMTs who respond to emergency medical calls. The Department responds to calls within 116 square miles of unincorporated El Paso County and 17 square miles within the city limits of Colorado Springs. The FFPD is supported by a property tax rate of 8.612 mills. The highly efficient volunteer-based combination department saves tax payers thousands of dollars over other full time staffed fire districts in El Paso County; something the board of directors, administrators and firefighters accomplish with a great deal of pride. The Falcon Fire Protection District proudly serves more than 23,400 citizens. House Fire CO Springs Delaware DR : A house fire on Delaware Drive in Colorado Springs, Colorado, left 5 people displaced from their home on the evening of January 20, 2013. According to CSFD Lt. Jeff Sievers, 1 person was also evaluated for minor injuries. Colorado Springs Fire Department responded with a working fire response of emergency vehicles and trucks to bring the fire under control, and expel all of the smoke that had built up in the home. Multiple ambulances were on scene to treat any potential patients from the fire incident. Neighbors from the surrounding area gathered outside in the cold to see what was going on because of the amount of emergency vehicles and emergency personnel surrounding the scene.

When fire crews arrived, they determined there was limited vehicle access to get to the fire. Mutual aid was requested from Falcon Fire and Colorado Springs Fire for additional crews and resources to fight the fire. The fire was brought under control in a reasonable amount of time. The fire was contained to the field it originated in and no structures were threatened.

First arriving CSFD company reported the roof was on fire and that this was a working structure fire. An order was given to an CSFD engine company to take a hydrant for water supply. The first engine company on scene reported smoke coming from the rear of the structure. Command was established and the scene was declared a working structure fire. Traffic Accident-CHFD Space Village Ave : On the afternoon of December 27, 2012, Cimarron HIlls Fire Department responded to a report of a traffic accident with injuries in the intersection of Marksheffel Road and Space Village Avenue. Two vehicles were involved and there were some leaking fluids. Temperatures were starting to drop and snow was falling steadily on the scene. Meatpacking Plant Fire-Pueblo CO : A fire in a an abandoned meat packing plant has kept Pueblo Firefighters busy. The fire was first reported on Sunday night, December 30, 2012. The fire became well involved in the multiple stories of the cold storage area of the old Alpha Beta Meat Packing Plant on Sante Fe Avenue in Pueblo, Colorado. Nearby Interstate 25 was closed for some time due to the fire and smoke coming from the incident. Putting the fire completely out has been quite challenging due to an 8 inch thick layer of cork that insulates the walls of that cold storage area. After 2 days of working on this fire, firefighters continue to respond to flare-ups coming out of the cold storage area. I met up with Captain Hammond, Truck 1, Rescue 1, and Engine 5, as they just completed a good knockdown on a flare-up of the upper story of the cold storage area on Tuesday night. Pueblo Fire Department will continually monitor the abandoned building until the fire is completely out. House Fire CO Springs Viking Drive : On Friday, June 29, 2012, about 10:23 AM, Colorado Springs Fire Department received multiple calls about a possible house on fire on Viking Drive. The first-in company arrived about 3 minutes after being dispatched to the alarm. Fire Fighters arrived to find the home heavily involved with fire, and immediately went in a defensive mode to attack the blazing home engulfed with fire, and that was putting off a heavy plume of black smoke that could be seen easily from Peterson Air Force Base. Colorado Springs Fire Department's Lieutenant Jeff Sievers, was the on scene Public Information Officer. Lt. Sievers reported that the Fire Fighters were able to protect the homes that surrounded the blazing home and that deck gun operations were initiated early in the fire attack. Three fire engines and three ladder trucks responded. He also stated that no one was home at the time of the fire and that no injuries were reported, and that a couple of fire fighters were being monitored for possible heat exhaustion. This structure fire was upgraded to a 2-alarm fire, but did not get a usual full 2-alarm response of units, due to heavy volume of fire units on the Waldo Canyon Fire. Fire Companies from Security and Fort Carson responded to this blaze, due to filling in for local Colorado Springs Fire Stations. Lt. Sievers also said that this fire was under investigation for the cause of the fire. Resources from all over outlying fire departments are assisting Colorado Springs Fire Department with apparatus and fire fighters, due to the overwhelming demand of the Waldo Canyon Fire. The responding companies were able to get a fast and effective knock down on this blaze. Colorado Springs Police provided immediate scene security to the area. All emergency agencies were very effective in taking control of this emergency, even as resources were limited due to other fires in the region.

Flame lengths of up to one foot in surface fuels. Thunderstorms, downslope winds and light precipitation were present over the fire area. Significant Events: There has been a maximum effort to contain the spotfires north of Rampart Ridge Reservoir. Lack of a Red Flag conditions and favorable weather conditions has allowed for securing of the subdivision of Cedar Heights and eliminate the potential of fire from destroyed structures involving other structures. Favorable weather and fire behavior has also allowed crews to go direct in all divisions. Development of management action points for evacuations have begun for Woodland Park, Monument and Manitou Springs. Resources were able to begin securing the Stanley Repeater site and reduce the threat of fire damage. Continued recon of the northern fire perimeter for useable contingency lines. President Obama came in today around noon to observe first hand the destruction of the Waldo Canyon Fire. He spoke briefly to some of the fire crews working on the fire.

3-Alarm Fire at Vacant Warehouse Colorado Springs : Colorado Springs Fire Department first in units report heavy fire through the roof of this vacant warehouse. Five engine companies and five truck companies responded. The order was given for a defensive (outside) attack on this structure fire. The contents of the building were reported to be made up of files and papers. Multiple fire hydrants were used during the attack on the blaze. On-scene personnel included 44 fire fighters. An auto salvage business south of this building had many vehicles near the south wall of the burning building. Multiple tow trucks were ordered to the scene to move these vehicles from possible harm. The blaze was contained to the one building. Crews will remain on scene through the night to monitor hot spots and flare ups. A thorough investigation into the cause is underway. No injuries were reported. Date of incident--January 13, 2012 just after 7PM. Wetmore Fire Colorado : On Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012 at approximately 1:00 PM a Structure Fire in Wetmore, Colorado spread from the home and into the grass, brush, and now forest. Some homes have burned during this fire. Keep in touch with your local news for evacuation updates near this area. Updates from Inciweb: Wetmore, Colo., Oct 24, 2012 (5:00 AM) - The Wetmore Fire, burning in grass, Ponderosa Pine and Oak Brush, has burned approximately 1742 acres one mile west of Wetmore. One hundred thirty firefighters from 16+ agencies are working as a team to fight the fire. Crews experienced extreme fire behavior Tuesday due to high winds; aerial resources were not able to fly. Aviation resources are ordered but may not be able to fly because the same gusty winds are predicted to continue today. There are an estimated 386 residents evacuated according to Custer county Sheriff Fred Jobe. The evacuations in place are for Greenwood, Wetmore, and east of Wetmore into Pueblo County. Reverse 911 was being utilized, however due to fire damage of utility lines; a multi-agency, house-to-house notification was implemented. Evacuated parties are being referred to Baptist Church at 303 E. 3rd Street in Florence, and the First Church of the Nazarene (719-564-3209), 84 Stanford in Pueblo. Additional elective evacuations were performed along Siloam Rd in western Pueblo County last night as the strong winds pushed the fire eastward. The public is being asked to stay out of the area. Colorado 96 is closed westbound from The Pueblo Reservoir south entrance to Wetmore, and Eastbound from Colorado 165 to Wetmore. Colorado 67 is closed southbound from County Road 15 to Wetmore. Local resources have been working around the clock maintain the road closures and structure protection for incoming Fire Crews... Lives and Structures is our priority. A Type 2 Incident Management Team has been ordered and will be arriving tonight and will take over management of the fires. Structure Fire-Ramah CO : Around 10 minutes to 3pm today a fire broke out in a mobile home in far eastern El Paso County in the 36000 block of Ramah Road E. outside of the small Town of Ramah. All occupants were able to make it safely outside. According to Fire Chief John Sillmann with Simla Fire Department, the home was fully engulfed upon the first emergency units arrival with multiple propane tanks exploding. Heavy smoke and flames were pouring from the home. A distant fire attack with a bumper-mounted deck gun on the fire apparatus was put to action to cool the propane tanks down and some of the fire so that crews could move in later with hoses to attack the blaze. No injuries were reported. Unfortunately, six occupants were displaced by this fire and the mobile home and the contents were reduced to ashes. Red Cross personnel were enroute to the scene. The calm winds helped firefighters by not allowing the fire to spread to the nearby pastures. Three separate fire agencies were called upon to fight the fire this afternoon. Ellicott FD Structure Fire : On the morning of November 8, 2012, Ellicott and Peyton Fire Department responded to a report of a house on fire on Sphinx Court. The first Peyton Fire Engine on scene reported dark smoke coming from the eves of the home. Multiple fire departments responded to assist with the fire. The fire ended up devastating the structure, but thankfully the residents were not at home when the fire started. Agencies on scene were: Peyton Fire Department, Falcon Fire Department, Calhan Fire Department, Tri-County Fire Department, Ellicott Fire Department, Colorado Springs Fire Department, AMR Ambulance, Pikes Peak Fire Association, El Paso County Sheriffs Office, and American Red Cross. A neighbor told me that he saw smoke coming from the home. He went over and searched the home for people and pets, while another neighbor called 911. He was able to rescue two dogs from the burning home. A Peyton Firefighter was knocked to the ground by an explosion near the south side of the home. He was uninjured and able to continue working on scene. The cause of this fire is still under investigation by an El Paso Sheriffs Office Fire Investigator. Ice Rescue-Falcon, CO : At around 2:10 P.M. Falcon Fire Department units were dispatched to a public assist call. Emergency Units responding to the scene were Falcon Engine 311, Falcon Battalion Chief Unit 303, Falcon Quick Response Vehicle 373, and Medic Unit 381. The urgent call was to rescue a dog that had fallen through the ice at a pond located on the golf course. Assistance was requested from Colorado Springs Heavy Rescue 17 to rescue the dog. The dog was located approximately 20-25 yards from the edge, at about the center of the pond. The dog was in the icy water for approximately 20-25 minutes before being extracted from the pond by rescuers. This body of water was frozen on top on about haIf of the surface area. I talked with Falcon Fire Department's Lt. Gortner, who was on scene, and he said that he was pleased with the outcome of this incident. He was also pleased with the close proximity of Colorado Springs Heavy Rescue 17 that had the appropriate equipment and personnel to perform a successful ice rescue. Structure Fire in Ellicott, CO : Ellicott Fire Department responded to a structure fire in a mobile home off of Highway 94 in Ellicott, Colorado. Mutual aid was brought in from surrounding fire departments. Some of those responding were Falcon Fire Department, Peyton Fire Department, Calhan Fire Department, Edison Fire Department, Tri-County Fire Protection District, and Schriever Air Force Base Fire Department. No nearby structures were threatened. Water tenders were used to shuttle water to the scene from a nearby fire hydrant in town. One resident of the home suffered from smoke inhalation. El Paso County Sheriffs Office is in charge of the fire investigation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Peyton Fire Dept. Peyton, CO : Peyton Fire Protection District has been serving their community as a formal district since 1988. Peyton Volunteer Fire Department was formed and started in 1954. The founder of the fire department is Merrill Weeks. The Peyton Fire Department is currently led by Fire Chief Chuck Omdahl, who has served on the Security Fire Department for 15 years. Chief Omdahl operates, serves, and protects the fire district with 20 volunteers, which include 2 Lieutenants and 2 Captains. An Assistant Fire Chief is planned to be appointed in the late summer of 2012. The Community of Peyton is also served by the Peyton Fire Explorer Program. This has been going on for the past 3 years, with approximately 8 current Fire Explorers. There have already been 4 Explorers that have graduated from the program, and they are now active Fire Fighters for the Community of Peyton. The District has been steadily updating their equipment and apparatus over the last few years. They currently have on order and expect delivery by February 2013, of a 3000 gallon combination tender/pumper. Chief Omdahl tells me that this new fire truck will be in line with what neighboring fire departments already have for their response, and will allow Peyton to respond to fires with a better initial water supply of 4000 gallons with the 2 first-in trucks. Water supply capabilities in this rural community are an important factor to consider, and makes a big difference in capablilities as the Fire District upgrades their fleet with new trucks. Basement Fire Colorado Springs : On Saturday, October 20th, 2012 at approximately 3:20PM, a 911 call came in from a bystander that a house had smoke coming from the basement. Colorado Springs Fire Department's Public Information Officer, Lt. Jeff Sievers, was on scene. He informed me that one bedroom had extensive damage to it by fire. The first arriving units were able to get a quick knockdown on this fire. He says it took approximately 5 minutes to put out. There were two occupants in the home at the time of the fire. They were on the first floor when their smoke detector sounded and they saw smoke in the house and were able to get out of the home o.k. Lt. Sievers said this fire was unintentional and accidental by leaving a candle burning unattended in the basement. He said the home is not livable because of smoke damage and the occupants had someone they could stay with. This structure fire response to N. Sheridan Avenue, consisted of two engines, two truck companies, one squad unit, one haz mat unit, one AMR Ambulance, and a R.I.C. Team.

Wetmore Fire Colorado Day 2 : Today is October 24th, 2012 and Day 2 of the Wetmore Fire in Custer County, Colorado. Yesterday there was 0% containment and fire crews had to deal with wind gusts close to 80MPH. Today crews were able to get 15% containment of this fire and also they were able to use air support in fighting this massive fire. Fire update from InciWeb: Wetmore Fire As of 4:00PM 10/24/12 Media Information number: (719) 582- 8448 Located: 1 mile south west of Wetmore Colo. First call came in at 1:32 PM / 10/23/12 and was reported as a wildland fire of unknown origin. Cause: Unknown (being investigated) Fire size: 2100 acres. Structures: 14 residential homes damaged. All structures lost are in Custer County. Wetmore Fire Colorado Day 3&4&5 : On Day 3 and 4 of the Wetmore Fire, great progress was made in containment, especially with weather working in favor the firefighters. As you might recall from "Day 1", the 80 MPH wind gusts hampered fire fighters efforts to get any containment. Key Facts as of 9:00 a.m. on October 26th, 2012 via InciWeb: Fire size is estimated at 2,100 acres. Containment is 65%. An estimatedtotal of 240 firefighters and support personnel are working the fire. Fire activity last night was minimal. A cold frontpassed through the area bringing 1 to 3 inches of much needed precipitationover the burn area. Crews continue to make substantial progress building containment line with a total of65% of the perimeter contained. Although snow has fallen on the fire, it isstill possible for residents to see smoke coming from deep within the fireperimeter as the fire continues to smolder. Evacuation orders have been lifted for all residences outside of the fire perimeter. Thoseareas within the fire perimeter remain under an evacuation order. Theseevacuations will remain in place until such time as it is deemed safe forresidents to return to their homes. Deputy Incident Commander Shane Del Grosso said, "We thank all cooperating agenciesfor their help. We've had a lot of success. The highways are open and power is being restored. No one has been injured." The Custer County Sheriff and the Colorado State Patrol continue to patrol arearoads. The public is urged to stay in their vehicles, to obey speed limits, andto not stop along highways. All roads within the fire perimeter remain closed. Hay bale crushes roof of moving vehicle : Driver of flatbed tractor-trailer hauling hay loses control and flips over. A compact vehicle was crushed by the large round hay bales coming off the truck. No injuries were reported. Southbound Interstate-25 traffic was snarled for hours during the cleanup. This motor vehicle accident took place on Southbound Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Location was just south of W. Colorado Avenue on the I-25 bridge above the pedestrian trail. This stretch of Interstate has been considered dangerous for large vehicles because of the 65MPH speed limit and the tightness of the curve. CSFD Structure Fire Chalmers RD : Colorado Springs Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire on Chalmers Road. The incident took place on August 25, 2012. The first company arriving on scene reported smoke coming from the residence. A full first alarm apparatus response was put on this structure fire assignment by dispatch. Engine 8 was assigned to hook up to the nearest hydrant for water supply. The first interior crew was able to get a quick knockdown on this fire and bring it under control. A primary and secondary search by fire crews, inside the home, confirmed that all occupants made it safely to the outside of the residence. No injuries were reported during this incident. According to Public Information Officer, Lt. Jeff Sievers, arson is suspected because of a possible domestic dispute, where gasoline may have been poured on things inside the home. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by Colorado Springs Fire Department. I spoke with a neighbor, who said he saw smoke coming from the residence, and immediately called 911.

Remembrance Rescue Project : From the Remembrance Rescue Project, "The Remembrance Rescue Project is not affiliated, endorsed or in any way connected with the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY). The FDNY acronym and shield are federally registered trademarks owned by the City of New York." I recently had the opportunity to see New York Heavy Rescue 4 in person at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Fanfest, which was held in Downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado. Seeing this emergency vehicle up close and in person brought mixed emotions. I felt anxious as I reflected on what a tragedy that 9/11 was for the United States. I also felt a sense of honor and respect for all of those brave men and women responding to that horrible situation and ended up sacrificing their lives. The Remembrance Rescue Project is a teaching tool, as this rescue truck travels around the country. I had the opportunity to get some great photos of this New York Heavy Rescue, that responded to the twin towers on 9/11, at Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Station. The next stop I was told, would be at a West Metro Fire Station, near Denver. I really enjoyed being able to see this "Project" first hand and I believe it is an awesome way to share this piece of history with our future generations. Outside Fire CHFD Peterson Road Cimarron Hills : At approximately 4:20PM Cimarron Hills Fire Protection District was toned out for an outside fire near Peterson Road and Highway 24 in the Community of Cimarron Hills, Colorado. CHFD Ladder Truck 1331 and CHFD Brush Truck 1340 arrived on scene to find a pile of debris in the open part of the field on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, using two hand lines, and wildland tools. The fire appeared to be of a suspicious nature and under investigation.

Once Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived on scene, Command asked for two additional AMR Ambulances, CSFD Squad 107, and CSFD Heavy Rescue 17 to respond. Two people had to be extricated from the crash, and were transported to local hospitals. According to CSFD Public Information Officer, Lt. Varnell, 2 vehicles collided, and a third parked vehicle was damaged. He also said that Heavy Rescue 17 would return back to the scene after vehicles were moved, to check for structural damage to an apartment building that was struck by one of the vehicles. Colorado Springs Police are investigating the cause of the crash and remained on scene, after Fire Department personnel completed their extrication of the patients. Colorado Springs Utilities was called to the scene, because a large electrical vault had been shifted off of its foundation due to the accident. The two occupants that were extricated from the white vehicle, later died, due to injuries sustained in this horrible crash.

Cimarron Hills Fire Dept. Celebrating 40 Years : On August 4th, 2012 Cimarron Hills Fire Protection District celebrated their 40th Anniversary as a fire department, which is located just East of Colorado Springs, Colorado. A new logo was presented to the public, along with a video presentation about their fire department. CHFD had all of their fire apparatus on display and safety demonstrations. Medical helicopters landed at 10AM and 1PM for the community to see. The firefighters showed their rescue skills by removing a vehicle door and it's roof while the public watched their auto extrication demonstration. Their Open House and Department Anniversary was well attended by the community.

T/A S Academy-Airport RD CSFD : A traffic accident occurred approximately 9:50PM on August 6, 2012 at the intersection of South Academy Boulevard and Airport Road in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Three vehicles were involved in the accident and Northbound Academy was closed for over an hour. Some of the Colorado Springs Fire Department emergency vehicles on scene were Ladder Truck 8, Fire Engine 8, Squad 108, D-2 Battalion Chief, and 3 American Medical Response Ambulances. There were multiple patients in this traffic accident that were taken to the hospital. Many Colorado Springs Police Officers were on scene for traffic control and accident investigation. Cimarron Hills FD Annual OPEN House 2012 : Cimarron Hills Fire Protection District will be having their Annual Open House from 9AM-3PM on Saturday, August 4th, 2012. This will take place at Cimarron Hills Fire Station No.1 at 1885 Peterson Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80915. Bring your friends and family over to see your local fire department and the fire apparatus. Activities will include a kids bicycle safety course, police cars, Neighborhood Watch information, and food served by a local Cub Scout Pack. CHFD will also be doing a 40th Anniversary Presentation at 12:00PM. Helicopters will land at 10AM and 1PM. There will also be an Auto Extrication Demonstration at 12:30PM. Police Officer dies in crash : At approximately 2:32PM, on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, a Colorado Springs Police Officer, on his motorcycle, crashed into the passenger side of a pickup truck on Austin Bluffs Parkway,near Silver Drive in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. The Police Officer was transported by AMR Ambulance to Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries received in the crash. Portions of Austin Bluffs Parkway were closed for many hours, while investigators investigated the scene of the motor vehicle accident and did cleanup. Austin Bluffs finally reopened at 7:55 PM, Tuesday. Police on the scene told me that the officer was conducting traffic enforcement and was on duty at the time of the accident. The investigation into the cause of the accident is active and still ongoing. No other details about the accident were released by Colorado Springs Police Department. Colorado Springs Fire Station No. 21 Groundbreaking Ceremony : On July 23rd, 2012 at 10:00AM, Colorado Springs Fire Department held a Groundbreaking Ceremony for their future Fire Station No. 21. CSFD Fire Station No. 21 is expected to OPEN in the second quarter of 2013. Designed by the Fennell Group, Fire Station #21 is a retro design harking back to the “old firehouse” while simultaneously incorporating the latest in functionality and energy efficiency. The building is a LEED project – Leading in Energy Efficient Design, and it is the City’s first attempt at constructing a LEED fire station. It is also the first building to be designed as a LEED platinum building – the highest level of LEED certification. This newest fire station will be built on the Northeast corner of Dublin Boulevard and Peterson Road in Colorado Springs, Colorado. CSFD reports that this will be the first fire station groundbreaking ceremony in five years. CSFD also reports that this fire station will receive an estimated 500 calls for response to emergencies, in the very first year of operation.

Resources will hold and improve fire line on the northeast perimeter of the fire on the Air Force Academy. Equipment will continue to work along Mount Herman Road to complete contingency line north of the fire. Additional equipment will be working north to south from Mount Herman Road to Rampart Reservoir to tie in the contingency line.

Isolated single and group tree torching. Conditions have been favorable for burnout to secure line construction. Peyton Fire Celebrating 25 Years : On June 16, 2012 from 10AM-2PM, Peyton Fire Protection District celebrated with food and events, their 25th Anniversary, as a Fire Protection District in El Paso County, Colorado, USA. This was also the fire department's Annual Community Barbecue. The event was held at Peyton Elementary School, located at 13550 Bradshaw Road. The Community of Peyton started with a Volunteer Fire Department back in 1955. Merrill Weeks was the Founder. In 1988, the Community formed Peyton Fire Protection District. Current Peyton Fire Chief, Chuck Omdahl, was telling me that he was very pleased with the amount of people that attended the celebration. Some of the participants at this event were a K-9 Unit and motorcycle unit with El Paso County Sheriffs Office, Memorial Star medical transport helicopter, El Paso County Sheriffs Office Dispatch with their remote control operated vehicle and bear. Also there was the crew with Pikes Peak Fire Rehab Units doing the grilling, cooking, and serving. The Peyton Fire Explorers were there offering a raffle, with a chance to win many prizes, including Wal-Mart and Macy's gift certificates. And for the younger children, the bounce house provided a way to jump off that extra energy. It was a fun and enjoyable time for family, friends, and members of the community. Wildland Fire CHFD : On June 2nd, 2012, Cimarron Hills Fire Department responded to a report of an outside fire in a field near homes. The fire was quickly contained to an area around 25 foot X 15 foot. This wildland fire was driven by intense wind gusts due to fast moving thunderstorm in the area. The first due-in brush truck, 1340, did a quick attack on this fast moving fire which involved some heavy brush. The fire was brought under control in five minutes. Extra resources were dispatched from neighboring Falcon Fire District as a precaution to get rapid control of the fire. This storm that moved over the area during this fire attack moved east to produce golf-ball size hail and a tornado in Eads, Colorado which is 27 miles north of Lamar, Colorado. Structure Fire on Brook Park Dr CSFD : Colorado Springs Engine 14 was dispatched to the neighborhood on a report of smoke in the area. The reporting party, as time went by, was able to locate the exact address of the smoke. This turned out to be a house-undergoing a remodel-that had a portion of the roof on fire. Firefighters had difficulty accessing the property because of fencing and the way it was set back from the road. The property that the home is on is next to Colorado Springs Fire Department's Station 14. No one was home at the time of the incident and no pets were inside. The fire was contained to the roof area and firefighters had brought the fire under control in a timely manner. Six companies were dispatched to this structure fire from Colorado Springs.

2-Alarm House Fire CSFD, COLO. : Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a report of a house on fire with the sound of an explosion in the 1400 block of Delaware today, March 23, 2012. No residents were home at the time of the fire. First-in fire unit called it a working structure fire before getting on scene due to the plume of smoke in the area. Heavy fire was visible on the outside of the home upon arrival. The structure fire was contained in a timely manner and the Red Cross is offering assistance to the residents at this time. Interesting enough, just months ago at this residence, they had a vehicle fire in the backyard. A driver lost control of her vehicle traveling over 100mph and plowed through the fence landing on the gazebo, just feet from the house. The vehicle then caught fire. This house fire is under investigation by Colorado Springs Fire Investigators. Apartment Fire Colorado Springs, CO 3 Alarms : An apartment fire at Cheyenne Vista Apartments in Colorado Springs, Colorado went to 3 alarms. The fire was spreading between the second floor ceiling and the third story floor and caused the floor to be compromised. High winds and steep access points near the building hampered firefighting efforts on the scene. Fifteen apartments were evacuated. Many of the residents watched and waited outside, and some took refuge in their vehicles in the parking lot. These apartment units are built on a bluff overlooking Colorado Springs. Despite the challenging conditions this structure fire presented, the fire was brought under control in a timely manner. The cause of this fire was determined to be ignited by careless smoking. The RED CROSS is assisting with displaced residents at this Crestone Lane apartment. Structure fire on Hathaway-Cimarron Hills Fire Department El Paso County Colorado : Firefighters battle a one-alarm structure fire in a fourplex type apartment building on Hathaway Drive in El Paso County. The fire apparently started in or around a storage structure adjacent to the 4plex. Cimarron Hills Ladder 1331 responded with an Engine Company from Peterson Air Force Base, along with CHFD Command Unit 1300. El Paso County Sheriff Deputies assisted with securing the scene and providing crowd control. The fire started around 2PM and was quickly extinguished to prevent further damage to the outside wall of the fourplex. A five-inch water supply line was attached to a nearby fire hydrant to supply Ladder Truck 1331 during the fire attack. Multiple hand lines were used during the operation. The fourplex units became filled with dense smoke, but thankfully, the building was vacant and currently had no tenants. This structure fire is still under investigation. No injuries were reported. Apartment Fire at "Fillmore Crossing Apartments" Colorado Springs : Colorado Springs Fire fighters battle a 2-Alarm blaze at an apartment complex 2nd story unit on Fillmore Street in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The fire was contained to one apartment unit. The fire was quickly brought under control. Many nearby residents braved the freezing cold temperatures to observe the fire crews in action.
